Before and After: The Drought from Above
Elephant Butte Reservoir, NM
While the drought for Texas in 2011 was severe, it is not the only state facing the heat. Elephant Butte Reservoir along the Rio Grande river in New Mexico is the largest reservoir in the state, and it provides hydroelectric power to the region. The images show the impact of 20 years of dry conditions across the southern United States. In 2009 the Bureau of Reclamation instituted conservation measure to restore water levels in the reservoir.
