But just a year into construction, Congress pulled funding and the project was abandoned. While discussions of reviving the project occasionally resurfaced over the decades, work was never again restarted. But it’s a history that the people in Eastport, Maine, and the Ocean Renewable Power Company, which installed the tidal turbine, are acutely aware of.
The working model of the project still sits in a museum on Eastport’s Main Street.
