Schmidt's Food Store -- which once offered this stretch of east Galveston easy access to fresh fruits, vegetables and meats -- closed long ago and was replaced by smaller corner stores selling chips, soda and beer at high prices. Some in Galveston have high hopes these mid-size markets will experience a renaissance in the coming years to help boost the health of the city.
