After stepping down as president after one term in 1999, Mandela continued to be a face of South Africa's new democracy to the world, including campaigning for the country to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup. South Africa won the bid. Mandela is pictured here with his third wife Graca Machel during the final match between the Netherlands and Spain on July 11, 2010.

Nelson Mandela, the first black president of South Africa, credited with ending apartheid there, died Dec. 5, 2013. He was 95 years old. Read more about his life.
