Hard Nut -- Mark Morris

In "The Hard Nut," Morris plays with gender in ways not normally seen in Nutcracker productions. He uses a ballet tradition called travesty, or the casting of men in women's roles like the maid in the party scene. But, in addition, said Dalva, "in this ballet, nature -- (the) snowflakes and flowers -- means everyone ... male, female and everywhere on the continuum -- that is gender."
