Five generations of Obamas lived in Kanyadhiang, a village near the upper bay of Lake Victoria in Kenya. But their family was still regarded by some, according to Maraniss, as jadak, or alien because their roots were found to the north or west. Here lies the gravesite of Mr. Obama's great-grandfather, Obama Opiyo.
