Second Stop: Lafayette Square

Located just north of the White House and with the Washington Monument in the background, Lafayette Square has a long history of protests. At this stop after leaving McPherson Square, organizers discussed previous demonstrations, including the 43,000-strong Bonus Army in 1932 who demanded they be able to cash in certificates for military service earlier than 1945, and most recently thousands of people opposed to the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline that would transport tar sands crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to refineries along the U.S. Gulf Coast.
