George H.W. Bush, the 41st president, turned 50 on June 12, 1974. He was chairman of the Republican National Committee, defending the party and President Nixon during the Watergate scandal. After Nixon resigned, Bush was named chief of the U.S. Liaison Office to China under President Ford.
