The second U.S. president reached his fifth decade on Oct. 30, 1785. At the time, he had just become the first U.S. ambassador to Great Britain. He reportedly told King George III that although he was attached to his own country, he wanted to work toward the restoration of the good nature and good humor of the two populations.
