Worst: Niger

Niger replaced Afghanistan this year as the worst country for mothers, according to the Save the Children report. "Unlike many other least-developed countries which perform 'well' with respect to their peers on at least one measure, Niger performs very poorly across all indicators of maternal and child health and well-being," the report stated. Only one in three births in Niger are attended by skilled health personnel, and girls on average attend only four years of formal schooling during their lifetime. In addition, the country is currently in the midst of a "worsening hunger situation, threatening the lives of a million children" according to the report.
