Federal stimulus funds that support Medicaid will dry up in June, leaving state governments to support much more of the program. Meanwhile, Medicaid enrollment has been rising across the nation due to the economic downturn. The PBS NewsHour has obtained budgetary data from the Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services revealing how much Medicaid costs will increase for each state in fiscal 2012.
States that list the 2012 projected budget deficit as "N/A" include those that have indicated they will not have a budget shortfall in 2012 (ND, WY, AR, and AK) and those that will have a shortfall but have not said how large it will be (NH, TN, DC and AL).
