Research has shown marketplace food portions in the United States have been increasing steadily since the 1970s. Soda bottle servings today, for example, are three times as big as their older counterparts and have almost three times as many calories, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
The American Diabetes Association's Dr. Robert Ratner suggests controlling portion sizes and not depriving things he or she enjoys. "One example is to eat a small serving of french fries or share a big one and you cut 250 calories out of your day," Ratner said.
