Nguyen always asks her students, "What does this symbolize for you?" Art therapy looks at how a student uses symbols, colors, and other visual cues in his or her paintings. The soldiers are not prompted to focus on any particular emotion while painting. Their interpretation of the same subject changes from week to week based on their mental and emotional state.
