UPDATED: Newtown Action Alliance heads to Washington to lobby Congress
The Newtown Action Alliance, a group of Newtown, CT parents formed after the Sandy Hook School shooting, are once again headed to Washington, D.C. to lobby Congress for stricter gun control.
According to The Hartford Courant, the trip was planned before Monday's mass shooting at Washington Navy Yard. About 50 members of the Newtown Action Alliance left for Washington on Tuesday where they are scheduled to attend a hearing on the "Stand Your Ground" law, The Day reported. On Wednesday they will hold a press conference with congressional leaders. During their trip they are expected to lobby Congress to require background checks for gun buyers.
UPDATED 11:50 a.m. ET Today's scheduled hearing on the "Stand Your Ground" law has been cancelled. Members of the Newtown Action Alliance are, however, planning on meeting with both Democratic and Republican congressional members this afternoon and on Wednesday to deliver letters demanding stricter gun control, specifically background checks for gun buyers. A press conference is scheduled at noon, on Wednesday in the Capitol Building.
