Iraq executed 42 people this week for “terrorist crimes,” Reuters reports.

Hassan al-Shimary, Iraq’s minister of justice, said in a statement that those hanged were guilty of “deaths of dozens of innocent citizens, as well as other crimes aimed at destabilizing the security and stability of the country and causing chaos and terror among the people.”

AFP writes that the latest total bring the total number of executions this year in Iraq to 132, eclipsing 2012′s total of 129 executions. Amid the news, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq has reiterated its call for the country to adopt a moratorium on all death sentences. The death penalty was reinstated in Iraq in 2005 after initially being suspended by the U.S.-led interim government in 2003.
