Wonder what the completion percentage for the more than 19,000 attempted passes by quarterbacks was in 2012? Completed passes? Common passing locations? Who has the most passes by zone?

Kirk Goldsberry is a spatial and visual analytics guy who likes to apply his craft to sports. He’s recently turned to a relatively new dataset: ESPN records on NFL quarterback passing.
“As the NFL enters its own version of the big data era, we should expect to understand the game better,” Goldsberry writes in Grantland. “New data and emerging forms of analytics can only stand to improve the characterization of NFL performance. Unfortunately, it’s fair to say that of the major American sports, the NFL is the least analytical, but it appears things are about to change. Happy NFL season, everybody!”
