Aleppo’s Cultural Center Under Attack in Syria’s Civil War
The ancient marketplace, or “souk”, in Aleppo, Syria, is a labyrinth of cobbled streets and stalls that, until recently, showcased glistening gold work and glass. The violence of the civil war between government forces and rebels has brought destruction and desolation to the once vibrant place.
Our slide show shows what the marketplace was like before and after fighting between the rebels and government forces climaxed in late September as both sides struggled to control the city.
