Couples may find D.C. “I dos” shut down

If the government shutdown remains in effect, government workers won’t be the only ones encountering heartbreak.

Two dozen couples scheduled to have their October weddings in various places around the National Mall — including the Lincoln Memorial, George Mason Memorial and others — may have their plans unceremoniously canceled depending on how long the shutdown goes.
National Mall spokeswoman Carol Johnson said emails were sent out to the prospective brides and grooms breaking the news that any weddings slated to take place while the government is shut down will be canceled.

Couples often apply for permits up to a year in advance but may be left with mere days to figure out new plans.

“I think people will be quite upset,” said Johnson. “Unfortunately, it’s beyond our control.”
