Austerity Protests Grip Europe

BY News Desk  November 14, 2012 at 1:25 PM EST

Transportation in parts of Europe was at a standstill Wednesday as strikers forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights and many train routes in Spain and Portugal.

Demonstrators railed against government cuts in major cities across the continent. In France, some held signs saying, “Enough austerity” and “We are all Greek,” showing solidarity with one of countries hardest hit by the eurozone’s economic crisis.

The cuts in places like Greece include layoffs and decreased wages. The government is making the cuts in order to reduce debt and get back on track economically.
