From the NewsHour Vault: This day in history
On this day in 1993, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and the Palestine Liberation Organization chairman Yasser Arafat publicly shook hands at the White House after signing a historic peace agreement via efforts by the Clinton Administration. The agreement, commonly referred to as the Oslo Accords, was seen as a promising development in Israeli-Palestinian relations.
The NewsHour’s own Gwen Ifill was one of hundreds standing on the White House south lawn that day.
“You could feel the history in the air,” she said.
