Gillespie: Criticism of Ad Spending Has Filled GOP Coffers
Republican operatives say the recent criticism of campaign ads being run by GOP-leaning groups against Democratic congressional candidates is serving a purpose: it’s helping those groups raise more money.
President Obama and other Democratic officials have decried the new crop of groups and the ads they’re running because they don’t identify their contributors.
Former Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie helped found two of the most prominent groups. He talked to the NewsHour this week:
Gillespie says Democrats’ criticism of the groups’ activities is misguided because campaign finance laws and IRS regulations long have allowed undisclosed donors to fund independent political advertising that favors either party.
