General Motors Co. announced Tuesday that Mary Barra, the company’s global product development chief, will serve as their new CEO. With Barra replacing Dan Akerson, who is expected to step down in January, it will mark the first time a woman led a major U.S. automaker.
Akerson is departing from the company earlier than previously planned because his wife was recently diagnosed with an advance stage of cancer.
“I will leave with great satisfaction in what we have accomplished, great optimism over what is ahead and great pride that we are restoring General Motors as America’s standard bearer in the global auto industry,” Akerson said in a message to employees.
