To be clear, Starbucks hasn’t completely banned guns in their retail stores. But on Tuesday, Starbucks Chief Executive Howard Schultz said in an open letter that firearms are not welcome in the cafes. In the past, Starbucks’ policy has been to comply to each state’s local gun laws, which often threw the coffee franchise into a spotlight in the ongoing national gun debate.

“Pro-gun activists have used our stores as a political stage for media events misleadingly called ‘Starbucks Appreciation Days’ that disingenuously portray Starbucks as a champion of open carry,” Schultz said in the letter.

However, there won’t be any signs that indicate that guns are unwelcome in all Starbucks retail stores. Schultz also noted that customers who walk in with guns won’t be asked to leave or treated differently by a Starbucks employee.
