In California, Police Declare 2010 ‘The Year of the Checkpoint’

On Monday’s NewsHour, we’re airing a collaborative report narrated by Lowell Bergman that looks into police checkpoints in California and whether they target drunk drivers, unlicensed drivers, undocumented immigrants or all of the above.

The first part of the multimedia project, written by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Ryan Gabrielson, was printed in
Sunday’s New York Times.

Gabrielson, an investigative reporting fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, has written for The Center for Investigative Reporting’s “California Watch” about how Golden State municipalities are using DUI checkpoints to generate revenue at the expense of undocumented immigrants.

You can listen to Gabrielson speak about his reporting on KQED Radio’s “The California Report.”
