Obama at Navy Yard memorial: “Our tears are not enough”

President Obama honored the 12 victims of the Washington Navy Yard shootings at a memorial service Sunday. Acknowledging that this is the fifth mass shooting he has witnessed as president, Obama said that there is a “creeping resignation” that these tragedies are seen as the “new normal.”

“We can’t accept this,” he said. “[W]e must insist here today there’s nothing normal about innocent men and women being gunned down where they work.”

Obama said the U.S. endures an epidemic of gun violence unseen in other advanced nations, and that the resignation “comes from the sense that our politics are frozen and that nothing will change.”

“By now, though, it should be clear that the change we need will not come from Washington, even when tragedy strikes Washington,” he said. “Change will come the only way it has come and that’s from the American people.”
