Political Checklist: A Reunion Focused on Paul Ryan
In this week’s Political Checklist, I chatted with senior correspondents Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff about Mitt Romney’s selection of Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate.
Gwen made the all-important point that voters ultimately don’t make their decision based on the running mate, though the No. 2 on the ticket can hurt, history has shown.
And Judy speculated if the Ryan pick will pull the Romney campaign out of the abstract, vote-against-President Obama approach and into discussions of tangible proposals.
“We don’t have all the details,” Judy said. “And I don’t think the campaigns are inclined to give us the details, because as soon as either campaign gets very specific about where they’re going to cut, what they’re going to do about senior benefits, even if it’s down the road, the other side is going to pounce.”
We also asked, will it make a difference in Wisconsin?
Watch the discussion to the end — you won’t regret it.
Finally, tune into the NewsHour Monday night for more on Ryan and his impact on the race. Judy will talk with Christina and Dan Balz of the Washington Post about the politics of the choice, Gwen will discuss Ryan’s policy positions and Jeffrey Brown will discuss Ryan’s biography.
