Political Checklist: Tough Tax Debate for Dems
Political Editor David Chalian and Senior Correspondent Gwen Ifill evaluate the new political realities in Washington as Democrats in the lame duck Congress appear ready to concede on a major issue: repeal of the much-debated Bush-era tax cuts.
Ifill points out that the debate over what to do about the tax cuts, which expire in January, is within only the Democratic Party, which appears unwilling to fight Republicans over extension of all the tax cuts after brutal midterm losses for Democrats in Congress.
Chalian and Ifill also touch on the prospects for a new START treaty passing in the lame-duck session. It is President Obama’s top foreign policy priority for the remaining session in Congress.
