Senator Cruz’s non-filibuster filibuster

Contrary to what you may be reading on Twitter or in headlines, Republican Senator Ted Cruz is not filibustering.

A filibuster implies a person takes the floor for an indefinite amount of time in order to obstruct a legislative process. Though Sen. Cruz claimed he would speak until he was “no longer able to stand,” he does, however, have a cut off time of Wednesday. And, according to National Journal, Cruz’s stance against Obamacare is “purely symbolic,” as his speech against Obamacare will not delay any votes.
