Shields and Brooks on Rick Santorum’s Future, Belmont Stakes

In this week’s Doubleheader, syndicated columnist Mark Shields and New York Times columnist David Brooks agree on one thing: Former Sen. Rick Santorum will not be on a short list (or long list) to join Mitt Romney’s ticket.

Christina, still filling in for Hari Sreenivasan, asked the guys about Santorum’s role in the Republican Party, now that he has opened a new super PAC. We also chatted about Mark’s most recent column about businessmen presidents.

For our “sport of politics” section, we lamented the untimely retirement of I’ll Have Another, which devastated horse racing fans who had hopes for the first Triple Crown winner since 1978. We made our picks for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes anyway. And since Christina got her show bet correct for the Preakness, she advised putting $20 on longshot My Adonis.

We closed on a happy note, with David excited to watch Johan Santana pitch against the Yankees Friday night.

One programming note: The Doubleheader will be on a hiatus until July 6, but it may be longer than that before the gang is back together in Washington. Stay tuned.
