In Missouri, where many expected the Senate race to be a shoo-in for Republicans this November, Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill is now ahead in the polls.

Her clout stems from Republican challenger Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo. whose recent “legitimate rape” comments stirred controversy — raising his national profile while invoking criticism of the Congressman across the country and within the national Republican Party.
