Toxic trash piles up fast on Rubbish Island in the Maldives

For 20 years, the Maldives has dumped waste on and around a small island near its capital city of Malé, the AFP reports. More than 200 tons of trash is dumped on the island each day, with a quarter of that coming from the island nation’s tourist industry. Open burning and little control over dumping has resulted in heavy metals and other toxic materials leaching directly into the ocean around the island.
