VIDEO: Kerry, Lavrov diplomacy talks underway in Geneva

Sec. Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov spoke from Geneva Thursday.

Diplomatic talks for a peaceful solution to the crisis in Syria are underway in Geneva, Switzerland between Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov . “Expectations are high,” Kerry said of the talks “This is not a game.” President Obama announced his plan to send Kerry to “pursue this diplomatic path” in his address to the nation Tuesday.

The U.S. hopes to work together with Russia to put forward a resolution to the United Nations Security Council requiring Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to hand over his chemical arsenal to international control.

As reported on the NewsHour last night, permanent member nations of the security council are currently in negotiations on whether or not the potential U.N. resolution will be enforced with a threat of military action.

Talks between Kerry and Lavrov are expected to resume tomorrow.
