Hundreds of staff workers and a few members of Congress also gathered on the front steps of the U.S. Capitol to observe a moment of silence to honor the victims.
In a show of solidarity, Congressional leaders said that the moment would also display that those who work in the Capitol complex will continue to do their jobs without intimidation.
The House of Representatives is not in session today, and is expected to resume legislative business next week.
