The night before Christmas

  • Crowds gather Tuesday to celebrate Christmas Eve in the biblical town of Bethlehem. Hundreds of tourists pack the town’s Manger Square where the nearby Church of the Nativity sits on the spot where tradition says Jesus was born. Pope Francis will conduct his first midnight Christmas mass at the Vatican.

UN finds mass grave in South Sudan

  • The United Nations says its staff have found a mass grave in the northern town of Bentiu in South Sudan containing 14 bodies and 20 more at a nearby river. A spokeswoman for the Geneva-based office told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the bodies are among 75 ethnic Dinka who were reported to the U.N. as “unaccounted for and feared dead.”

    Syrian airstrikes continue in Aleppo

  • The latest Syrian government air raids on rebel-held areas of the northern city of Aleppo kill at least 15 more people. Human rights activists say the toll since Dec. 15 is now 360.
