    The Mississippi River crested at 47.8 feet at Memphis on Tuesday, just short of the 1937 record. The waters have engulfed riverbanks in Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Mississippi, and Louisiana, prompting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to open floodgates, sending millions of gallons of water into Lake Pontchartrain.
