Thousands Gather in Pennsylvania to Remember Flight 93 Victims
Update: President Bush traveled to the crash site of United Flight 93 in Shanksville, Penn. and offered personal condolences to family members on the one year anniversary of the flight's crash on Sept. 11.

Earlier in the day, family members joined thousands of other mourners in a grassy field near the crash site to mark the anniversary.

The passengers and crew of that flight have been hailed as heroes for challenging their hijackers and apparently keeping their plane from hitting its intended target. Speaking at the morning ceremony, Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge, a former governor of Pennsylvania, paid homage to the victims and their families.

"Your loved ones did not expect to serve the cause of freedom on that Tuesday morning, but serve it they did," Ridge said. (9/11/02)
