On September 11, 2002, thousands gathered to observe the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.  The somber anniversary marked the passing of a difficult year -- one that would leave the country, and the world, forever changed.
