Virginia Declaration of Rights

On June 12, 1776, the Virginia House of Delegates approved the Declaration of Rights, a landmark document that was a blueprint for the U.S. Constitution. [CC]

  1. What are rights? Where do they come from? Can you think of one way they are protected in the United States?
  2. Contrast a natural right with a political right. Why did the authors of the Virginia Declaration decide to include natural rights in the document?
