The Seattle-based airplane manufacturer Boeing has announced plans to acquire archrival McDonnell Douglas for $13.3 billion dollars. The resulting global colossus would unite the world's largest commercial-jet manufacturer with a military-aircraft powerhouse, creating a single giant defense contractor for the U.S. government.
