Two House committees have voted on a version of the bill, and Larson said that Democratic leaders may not wait for a vote by the House Energy and Commerce Committee before bringing the bill to the floor. That committee has been stalled by fiscally conservative “blue dog” Democrats wary of the cost of the legislation.

Later in the afternoon, however, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said chances were “very small” that the House would take up the bill next week.

Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday that the Senate will not vote on a health care reform bill before its August recess. In a town hall meeting meeting, President Obama said that the delay was “OK,” as long as Congress was working to pass legislation this year.
