Moussaoui Gets Life Sentence for Role in 9/11 Attacks
Moussaoui, a 37-year-old French citizen, is the only person charged in the United States in connection to the jetliner hijackings that killed nearly 3,000 people at the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Virginia and a Pennsylvania field.
His lawyers asserted the FBI and other government agencies mishandled pre-9/11 intelligence. The defense team also argued Moussaoui testified that he had a role in Sept. 11 in order to get the death penalty and become a martyr.
It took the jury seven days of deliberation to come up with their verdict of life in prison with no chance of parole. During the trial, the jurors heard wrenching cockpit recordings of passengers trying to retake United Flight 93 over Pennsylvania and listened to dozens of relatives of the victims describe the losses they endured that day.
