Cold War Sees New Light With 'Hawk and Dove'

Two of America's most important foreign policy thinkers during the tumultuous 40-year struggle with the Soviet Union are the stars of a new book – "The Hawk and The Dove: Paul Nitze, George Kennan, and the History of the Cold War."
Paul Nitze and George Kennan

The book’s author is Nicholas Thompson, an editor for Wired Magazine and Nitze’s grandson. Thompson describes how Nitze and Kennan's intense intellectual rivalry played a key role in helping to define U.S. Cold War policy.

In this podcast interview, NewsHour Foreign Affairs Senior Producer Mike Mosettig talks with Thompson about the book and the complex relationship between these two men.

Kennan and Nitze, who are now both deceased, also appeared multiple times on the NewsHour program. This video collection includes interview highlights and conversations when they appeared on the NewsHour in 1989 and 1996 to discuss their memoirs.
