Bush the Projected Winner
Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is the projected winner in the Florida gubernatorial race. Based on preliminary vote tallies, Bush is expected to defeat challenger Bill McBride by a decisive vote margin, according to early news reports. The victory would give Bush a second term in office. Official results will be posted when available.

Bush Pulling Away From McBride

Update: Gov. Jeb Bush seems to be pulling ahead of challenger Bill McBride. Polls show Bush's lead among Florida voters is growing after a Bush campaign offensive designed to equate a McBride win with higher taxes. A Miami Herald/St. Petersburg Times poll shows Bush leading McBride 51 percent to 43 percent.

State Profile
The current eclectic population of the nation's fourth-largest state is a reflection of its heritage. During its history, parts of Florida have been under Spanish, English, French, American, and Confederate rule. Just as the European powers clashed over control of the huge peninsula known for its riches and strategic location, modern American presidential hopefuls battle for its bounteous supply of 27 electoral votes.

Candidate Profile:
Florida Gov. Jeb Bush boasts a rare political heritage that has given rise to one of the most geographically diverse and powerful political dynasties in U.S. history.

His grandfather, Prescott Bush, was a popular U.S. senator from Connecticut. Prescott's son, George Herbert Walker Bush was elected president in 1988 after holding a host of high-level government positions, including the vice presidency.

John Ellis Bush, known as "Jeb," was born Feb. 11, 1953 and grew up in Midland and Houston, Texas. While in high school he developed an interest in Latin America and traveled to Mexico to teach English.

Candidate Profile:
Bill McBride has the kind of resume political operatives dream of. He's a Florida native born to a working class family in rural Leesburg.

He grew up attending public schools and, according to his campaign Web site, learned the value of hard work and education from his parents. He was elected governor of Florida's Boys State while in high school in 1962.

McBride was a high school football star and used his talent to win a scholarship to the University of Florida in Gainesville.
