Official Results: Pickering Defeats Shows to Win 3rd District Seat
U.S. Rep. Charles "Chip" Pickering defeated U.S. Rep. Ronnie Shows to win the Mississippi
3rd District U.S. House race, according to results pubished by the Mississippi Secretary of State. Pickering earned 64 percent of the vote to Shows' 35 percent.

The two congressmen were forced to square off in a newly drawn district after Mississippi lost a house seat after the 2000 census. (12/05/02)

State Profile
Mississippi, a Yellow-Dog Democrat state for much of the 20th Century, has continued its conservative politics by backing national Republicans while still leaving so-called Dixiecrats in charge of the state house.

Candidate Profile:
First elected in 1996, Chip Pickering has built a strong conservative voting record. But it was the defeat of his father's nomination to serve on the federal appeals court that made headlines and enemies this past year. Now, with his district merged with another, he must run against another incumbent to keep his seat in the House.

A conservative Democrat who has supported his party only half of the time, Ronnie Shows has built a political base out his work as a transportation commissioner in a rural part of the state.
