Official Results: Dole Defeats Bowles to Win Open U.S. Senate Seat
Republican candidate Elizabeth Dole defeated Democrat Erskine Bowles,
according to results released by the State Board of Elections. Dole won 54 percent of the vote to Bowles 45 percent.

Dole will replace Republican Sen. Jesse Helms who is retiring after 30 years in office. (12/06)

Candidate Profile:
Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, Bowles was the second of four children of Jessamine and Hargrove "Skipper" Bowles.

He grew up in Greensboro and went to college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, majoring in business and graduating in 1967.

Before serving as President Clinton's chief of staff Bowles managed the Charlotte investment banking firm that he founded in 1975.

Candidate Profile:
A native of Salisbury, North Carolina, Dole graduated with distinction from Duke University in 1958 and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

She earned a degree from Harvard Law School in 1965 and also holds a master's degree in education and government from Harvard. As President of the American Red Cross, an organization larger than many of the Fortune 500, Dole oversaw approximately 32,000 paid and 1.3 million volunteer staff.
