Official Results: Porter Defeats Herrera to Win New 3rd District Seat
Republican candidate Jon Porter won Nevada's new 3rd District House seat, defeating his opponent Dario Herrera with 56 percent of the vote to Herrera's 37 percent, according to the the State Board of Elections.

An early lead by Herrera began to diminish after Porter mounted a last minute campaign surge and ethics issues began to plague Herrera. (12/06)

One of those, Nevada's 3rd District, has become more personal and more negative as the candidates, parties and outside groups pour millions of dollars into campaign ads.

State Profile
Just 70 years ago, only 91,000 people called the sprawling desert plains and rocky terrain of Nevada their home. Today, the "Silver State" has experienced such rapid growth that in one decade its population has ballooned from 1.2 million to 2 million people. According to the 2000 census, Nevada has experienced the largest rate of population gain in the country -- a stunning 66.6 percent growth rate since 1990.
 

Candidate Profile:
At just 29 years old, Dario Herrera has already racked up a lengthy political resume. A hopeful for the congressional post representing Nevada's new 3rd District, Herrera is currently chairman of the Board of County Commissioners for Clark County, which includes the city of Las Vegas. He became a county commissioner for the county's District G in 1999 and has chaired the board since 2001.

Former State Sen. Jon Porter is no stranger to Nevada campaign circuit. The long-time Nevadan is making his second bid for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives -- this time facing a tough race in the state's newly created 3rd Congressional District. But as former mayor and city councilman in Boulder City, he brings hometown experience to the contest.
