to Begin Second Term
Democratic
candidate Steve Israel is the projected winner in New York's newly
formed 2nd Congressional District race. Israel defeated retired
firefighter Joe Finley according to news reports. Official results

Israel
far ahead of Finley in fundraising
As of Aug. 21, 2002, Rep. Steve Israel had far outpaced his opponent,
New York City firefighter Joe Finley, in raising and spending
campaign cash in the contest for the New York 2nd District House
seat, according
to the Center for Responsive Politics.
Center
statistics showed Israel had raised $1,260,042 and had spent $492,007,
leaving $836,265 in funds yet to be used.
Finley
had raised $63,088 and had spent $35,032, leaving him with $28,055
for the final weeks of the campaign.
All
of Finley's funds have come from individual donors while Israel
has collected 32 percent of his total from Political Action Committees
and the rest from individuals.
