Israel to Begin Second Term
Democratic candidate Steve Israel is the projected winner in New York's newly formed 2nd Congressional District race. Israel defeated retired firefighter Joe Finley according to news reports. Official results will be posted when available. (11/05, 11:00 p.m. EST)

Israel far ahead of Finley in fundraising
As of Aug. 21, 2002, Rep. Steve Israel had far outpaced his opponent, New York City firefighter Joe Finley, in raising and spending campaign cash in the contest for the New York 2nd District House seat,
according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Center statistics showed Israel had raised $1,260,042 and had spent $492,007, leaving $836,265 in funds yet to be used.

Finley had raised $63,088 and had spent $35,032, leaving him with $28,055 for the final weeks of the campaign.

All of Finley's funds have come from individual donors while Israel has collected 32 percent of his total from Political Action Committees and the rest from individuals.

Candidate Profile:
Steve Israel is a Long Island native who was first elected to congress in 2000. As a member of the moderate New Democratic Caucus he has voted to repeal the marriage penalty and the death tax. Israel is a member of the Democratic Caucus Homeland Security Task Force and serves on the House Financial Services Committee.

Candidate Profile:
Joe Finley is a third generation New York City firefighter. At age six, he moved with his family to Northport, Long Island, where he has lived for 40 years. Finley suffered lung damage as the result of of rescue efforts at the World Trade Center Complex. Before becoming a firefighter Finley worked in the advertising industry.
