State Profile
Located in the Pacific Northwest, Oregon has a reputation for being an independent and laid-back state, but one that's also known for political innovations and trend-setting.

Candidate Profile:
A moderate Republican with an independent streak, Gordon Smith is looking for a second term as senator from Oregon. Republicans think he has a moderate record that will sit well with voters in November, but Democrats say his conservative views are out of touch with Oregon voters, who are typically a moderate-to-liberal bunch.

Candidate Profile:
Bill Bradbury hopes to unseat Smith, whom he sees as failing Oregonians on two counts important to voters: the environment and assisted suicide. Known as a moderate Democrat, his supporters believe he's a better representative for Oregon. But he faces a challenge when it comes to raising money; in terms of finances, he is well behind the incumbent.
