Official Results: Janklow Defeats Herseth to Win SD House Seat
GOP candidate and four-term governor William Janklow edged out a narrow victory against Democratic candidate Stephanie Herseth for South Dakota's U.S. House seat, according results published by the South Dakota secretary of state.

Janklow earned 53 percent of the vote to Herseth's 46 percent.

Herseth, a 31-year old attorney and first-time candidate, faced a formidable opponent in Janklow, the state's four-time governor -- but the race between the political newcomer and veteran remained close throughout the campaign.

The state's sole House seat became open for the first time in six years because Rep. John Thune decided to run for the US Senate.

Janklow won with 53 percent of the vote to Herseth's 46 percent, according to the South Dakota Secretary of State's final results.
