Official Results: Matheson Defeats Swallow to Win UT 2 Seat
Incumbent Rep. Jim Matheson (D) won a narrow victory over challenger John Swallow (R) to retain his Utah 2nd District U.S. House seat, according to results published by the state elections office. Matheson earned 49.4 percent of the vote to Swallow's 48.7 percent.

Low Cash Totals in Utah Race Defy Pundits' Predictions
Update: Oct. 17, 2002 -- The Utah 2nd District House race set records for spending in 2000 and pundits and political leaders had expected funds from the national parties to flow into Utah again. The deluge that was expected, however, has not materialized and incumbent Democrat Jim Matheson seems to be pulling away from his challenger, Republican John Swallow.

Candidate Profile:
Jim Matheson is the son of former two-term governor Scott Matheson. He was elected to the U.S. House in 2000 after working for energy development and consulting firms. He also served on the Salt Lake Public Utilities Board. Matheson has said his goals are economic growth and saving Social Security.

John Swallow is an attorney and a member of the Utah Legislature. He chairs the Public Utilities and Technology Committee and serves as a regional whip for the Republican party. Swallow has said that he wants to better fund Utah's education programs and cut taxes.
